On December 2–3, 2024, Epico hosted two Policy Accelerator workshops at its Brussels office, bringing together experts from industry, NGOs, and public institutions to drive innovation in sustainable waste management. The workshops provided a platform for exchanging ideas and developing actionable recommendations for policymakers in the upcoming legislative term and in anticipation of the Clean Industrial Deal.
Key Focus Areas
- Developing scalable solutions to reduce landfill dependency
- Advancing Waste-to-Energy (WtE) and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies
- Promoting a thriving circular economy
During the workshops participants presented their proposals to leading figures in the sector, including Prof. Christian Ehler (Member of the European Parliament), Georg Kobiela (Bellona Europe), and Janek Vähk (Zero Waste Europe). Their critical insights shed light on gaps and potential roadblocks, strengthening the proposals and ensuring a more robust policy framework.
What’s Next
The insights gathered from the workshops culminated in a Policy Brief, outlining actionable steps for achieving sustainable and harmonised waste management across the EU, enhancing the deployment of CCUS and Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies, and advancing efforts towards the EU’s ambitious net-zero target by 2050.
