Steel is an essential material for meeting global social and economic needs, including construction, infrastructure, transportation, machinery, and consumer goods. However, its production currently contributes to 8% of the global CO2 emissions from energy, making it a critical area for decarbonization.
Decarbonization of the steel sector is a complex and challenging task, requiring innovative technologies, substantial investments, and policy changes. International cooperation can align policies across countries, drive investment in net-zero technologies and create a level playing field internationally.
Stronger cooperation through alliance-building can catalyze emissions reduction by setting ambitious targets, sharing knowledge and best practices, facilitating exchange about policy frameworks, and exploring avenues for cooperation between industrialized countries and emerging economies. An upcoming paper from EPICO and the KAS, building on the results of a two-day workshop with key stakeholders, will address some of these questions in the context of the role of the G7 climate club in the decarbonization of the steel sector.
In the lead-up to COP28, EPICO and KAS are bringing together key stakeholders to discuss effective solutions for global steel sector decarbonization. The discussion will focus on the role of international partnerships in the EU's industrial strategy, insights from the upcoming publication, and expectations for COP28.
The panel discussion will be followed by a networking reception for on-site participants.
