On Friday 23 February, EPICO hosted a webinar with Prof. Ottmar Edenhofer, Chairperson, European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), Ms. Olivia Gippner, Member of Cabinet, European Commissioner for Climate Action, Mr. Holger Lösch, Deputy Director General, Executive Board, Federation of German Industries (BDI), and Dr. Bernd Weber, CEO, EPICO KlimaInnovation.
Moderated by Olga Scheer (Industry and Climate Reporter, Handelsblatt), the panel discussion began with a presentation by Professor Ottmar Edenhofer on the ESABCC’s latest report on the 2040 target.
Olivia Gippner (Cabinet of the Commissioner for Climate Action) called climate neutrality “a feasible target” for the EU. Ms Gippner also emphasised the need for greater collaboration with the industrial sector, and argued for more access to trainings and re-skilling programmes to prepare the European workforce for the green and digital transition. Whereas Holger Lösch (BDI) shed light on German companies’ reaction to the Commission's proposal, stressing the importance of maintaining competitiveness and unleashing innovation and investments.
Finally, EPICO's Dr Bernd Weber called for a comprehensive and coherent approach at the EU level to reach a 90% reduction in net GHG emissions. He put forward three key recommendations:
- Strengthening the Single Market
- Developing an industrial and innovation agenda for clean technologies
- Boosting the international aspect of the European Union’s industrial policy framework
